What is food quality Stainless Steel?

Stainless steel is an alloy made up of several materials.

Food grade comprises three elements, namely iron ore, chromium and carbon.

The 300 series of graded stainless steel falls under the category: food grade.

This grading means that the 304 series steel from which Brayco.com.nz products are manufactured meets the international standards regarding food safety.

Another reference name for 304 food-grade stainless steel is A2.

Why is 304-grade Stainless Steel recommended for food safety?

Technical spec relates to the percentage of chromium or nickel present in the composition of the steel.

304-grade stainless steel is marked at 18/8.

To be graded as 304, stainless steel may not contain more than 0.8% carbon and must have an iron ore composition of over 50%.

No aluminium is permitted to be used in the manufacture of 304 stainless-steel grade products.

What this translates to is a safe product that’s resistant to heat and is highly durable.

Are there other benefits to purchasing 304-grade stainless steel products?

Because 304-grade stainless steel is a high-grade alloy, it:

doesn’t conduct heat
it is non-magnetic
it is resistant to running electricity

The disadvantages of buying inferior grade stainless steel equipment

Purchasing a product that is inferior to the recommended food grade standard puts the purchaser at risk of contravening food safety regulations.

The 200 range of stainless-steel products fall into this category – products in this range are not classified as food grade.

Any product within the 300-grade stainless-steel range is specified as food grade to be on the safe side.

The most popular choice among restaurant owners and caterers is the 304 range.

Apart from falling short of safety standards, inferior alloys corrode, fracture easily due to heat stress, and experience is pitting and cracks, especially near a weld.

In the long run, saving a buck at the outset could find you spending far more than anticipated.

How do I take care of my 304-grade stainless steel products?

While using bleach is widely recommended, we suggest daily cleaning using a mild detergent and a non-abrasive sponge.

Work with and against the grain to achieve a sparkling, clean surface.

Dry the newly cleaned surface with a clean towel to buff and add a sheen.

Never use steel wool or metal brushes on your stainless steel surfaces. Occasionally, a stainless-steel polish can be applied.
